At a-one day of Lagos State Safety commission Law Symposium on Occupational Safety andHealth Regulation with a theme” Achieving Workplace Safety in a Mega Smart City, the Director General (DG) of Lagos State Safety Commission, Hon Hakeem Dickson told the experts, professionals, stakeholders and all and sundry that all road users do not need to speed excessively when driving at all times.  He made this uncommon statement at 3BBB’s Event Centre, Ketu Bus Stop, Ikorodu Road, Agboyi Local Council Development Area, Lagos.  Speaking to the gathering in his opening remarks, Hon. Dickson said that the very moment the policies behind the law symposium on occupational safety and health regulation are signed by the Lagos State House of Assembly into law, that offenders would be seriously dealt with.  He welcomed all and sundry to the heavily educative, informative and interactive fora.

Speaking to the audience, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. AkinwunmiDapoAmbode through his representative at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Relations, Lagos State, Dr. Jemilad, Longe told the audience that the general wellbeing and safety of the people of Lagos State is paramount and an integral part of the organizing development agenda of the State. 

Speaking to the audience the Governor of Lagos State, Ambode, said that “there has to be elimination of risks and hazards in the workplace and the enhancement of health safety of workers in the workplace through the introduction and implementation of polices and strategies geared towards building a sustainable safety culture through a synchronized, supervised and monitored safety system are very essential to improving the level of productiveness as he tells the stakeholders that exactly two weeks ago a newly rebranded Lagos State Safety Commission was launched with the aim of creating heavily awareness on safety issues that would assist to prevent avoidable deaths, losses and injuries.  Ambode tells the audience that the re-branding was part of his administration’s effort to improve the general safety framework that could effectively respond to the safety challenges that are actually peculiar to mega cities all over the globe.  

 The Governor,Ambode tells the audience the law symposium was initiated as part of their efforts to achieve the vision zero for a world of working without accidents, diseases, or harm which was launched of the world Congress on Safety and Health in Singapore in September, 2017.  His Excellency, Governor Ambodereminded the stakeholders that the holding of the law symposium is in line with the 7thGolden Rules developed at the global congress and also consistent with their administration well-known commitment to the principle of all inclusive governance through which relevant stakeholders are engaged on issues of public importance as he tells the audience that the current status of Lagos State as the industrial and commercial nerve of Nigeria and the West Africa sub region as well as its ranking as the 5th largest economy in the West African regionwith a projection to become the 3rd largest in 2020, requires that special attention be given to safety issues.  The law symposium paraded two different panelist sessions and the panelists gave an uncommon account of themselves with their cerebral submissions.  The first panelists comprised the following panelists.

§  Prof. Martins Dada, Lecturer, Building Department, University of Lagos,
Akoka, Yaba, Lagos.
§  Dr. Jacob Nwachukwu, Managing Director, Alyon Synergy Ltd
§  Hazan B. Hazan, HSE, Advisor, BCL Group Ltd.
§  DapoOmolade, Hybrid Consultants
The first panel was moderated by Mrs. Nike Olokode, while the second panel of discussion was moderated by Dr. Jide Martins of the Ministry of Justice, Lagos Stateand the panelists are:
§  Dr. TitololaHameed, Lecturer at the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island
§  Engr. KayodeFowode
§  Mr. Femi Abiodun
§  EhiIden.
Speaking with journalists, the House Committee Chairman on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. ShokunleOlusola, who representsOshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency 1 told the journalists that the Law Symposium conference came up at a time that the Lagos State Government has consistently preached safety concerns to all and sundry.

Speaking again with journalists, Hon. Olusola said that everyone should be extremely careful at homes, workplaces, along the roads, to avoid accidents of any degrees.  He said that it is our right to be protected, as lives and properties must be protected at all times.  He also submitted that there has to be a community based organization and Non-governmentalorganisations.  He agrees that the law symposium policies should be taken to the grassroots for heavy awareness.
