Professor
Olayinka Akanke Abosede, a Professor of Community Health and Primary Health
Care at the college of medicine, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idiaraba,
Mushin, Lagos, has graciously delivered the first inaugural lecture series for
2017/2018 academic session to a well attended inaugural lectures by all and
Sundry. The Topic of the Inaugural Lecture Series is PRIMARY HEALTH CARE IN
NIGERIA GOLD – PLATING OR REFINING THE GOLD “KEY TO HEALTH FOR ALL”
Prof.
Abosede reminded all and sundry that staying healthy is not a simple or
personal matter but a family, community, national and global challenge. She
described primary health care as the gold key for health for all which may be
gold plated or gold refined. She took the audience through the evolution of
primary health care in Nigeria and the challenges of health system and she made
attempts to tackle them at local and national levels and Prof. Abosede stated
her contributions to the individuals, family, and community at the national
levels as she has contributed her impact on maternal health and infant
nutrition and impact of traditional herbs such a Agbo Jedi on the health of
children.
And
she also sought to understand mothers on the use of breast milk and use of
express breast milk of working mothers through their babies. Her findings on
the maternity leave for nursing mothers of six weeks before and six weeks after
led to the elongation of maternity leave for nursing mothers as the nursing
mothers now have four months maternity leave. Speaking with iconblazemagazineonline
Prof. Abosede said that Almighty God has blessed Nigeria with good soil and
mineral resources but she painfully disclosed that corruption has really
bedeviled the entire fabric of the citizenry.
Prof.
Abosede noted that all Nigerians need quality health as she said that health is
the sum total of well being of all the citizenry. Speaking further Prof. Abosede
said that the change mantra has to start with everyone as she says that most Nigerians
are very lazy and dirty. She adduces that everyone must learn the culture of
washing their hands after using the convenience, but, very sadly, she says that
lots of the citizenry do not wash their hands after using the conveniences.
Prof. Abosede says that if our leaders have the fear God in their minds that
they would lead us aright thereby the provision of meaningful and productive strakes
for health for all would be possible and achievable.
Speaking
further, Prof. Abosede said that the youths are not ready to do anything
meaningful rather they prefer to block their ears with earphone devices thereby
when one is talking with them; they hardly hear what one says. She generally
concurs that great miracles await us all as Nigerians. Prof. Abosede disclosed
to iconblazemagazineonline that the other day she went to federal secretariat
for official matters but, that she saw men who drove jeeps and other expensive
vehicles shamelessly answering the call of nature in the open regardless of whom
is looking at them.
She
says that she wanted to take pictures of them to post on social media, but, she
later changed her mind. She later queried that opening defecation would cause
health challenges for all and sundry. She again advised the citizenry to be
conscious of how they keep their homes, offices and neighbourhood clean at all
times. Speaking with iconblazemagazineonline the Baale of Idiaraba, Mushim,
Lagos Chief Dauda Kareem Ojuromi aka K.B.K said that he is really happy for
Prof. Abosede who has the glory of God to deliver her inaugural lectures. He
says that he is actually pleased as Prof. Abosede appreciated his presence at
the inaugural lectures He spoke some kind words as he described Prof. Abosede a
good nurtured woman who renders assistance to all and sundry that came her
ways.
