BRAIN DRAIN IS REALLY HELPFUL TO OUR
HEALTH CARE SECTOR – DR. AKINLADE

Speaking as
the guest speaker Dr. Olukayode Akinlade, Medical Director krown hospital,
Lagos said brain drain is really helpful to the general wellbeing of the health
care sector adding that Indians had also experienced brain syndrome in the last
four decades.
Speaking
further as the guest speaker Dr. Akinlade at the Association of Resident
Doctors (ARD) 12th scientific conference and Ordinary General Meeting
with a theme: Health on the Next Level Agenda at the Malaria Reaserch Centre
(MRC) auditorium Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja,
Lagos, although the guest speaker Dr. Akinlade titled the theme again as ( An
Overview of Nigeria’s Health systems and Interventions). Of a truth the Medical
Director of Krown hospital, Lagos, Dr. Akinlade did not disappoint the
participants with his celebral presentations adding that Nigeria with a
population of over 200 million has only 40, 000 medical doctors, whereas India
a sub – Continent has 1.3 million medical doctors.
He adduced
that the Indian economy has progressively improved because the health care
systems had been steadily stable with good projections of all manners of
services rendered to patients both
Indians and foreigners alike adding that a time would come in the history of
Nigeria’s medical applications where all those medical doctors who had gone
abroad for better opportunities would come back home with improved medical
researches and facilities thereby the Nigeria’s
health care sector would become heavily attractive and better managed by
the policy makers.
Speaking
further the guest speaker Dr. Akinlade told the participants that health is
wealth but, very sadly our country Nigeria is sick because the health care
issues are not properly taken care of by the powers that be adding that poor
salaries leads to brain drain.
He said that
every one needs to work together as the health care sector is a team work
adding that they need to do more dialoguing to achieve greater result, Dr.
Akinlade said that out of the 59 Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) nationwide that
if proper scrutiny is being done on them , that lots of them would end up in
jail as a result of corruption which also leads to brain drain.
He said that
poor planning and lack of maintenance of medical facilities caused heavy
breakdown of not achieving successes in the health care sector adding that the
system needs to develop a good health care sector as a model.
He told the
participants that one of the problems of health care sector is the politicians
and politics adding that there has to be a strong national health care sector
legislation from the national assembly.
He said that
the government has to improve performance adding that there has to be more of
the primary health care centres in the country as it is done in India, USA,
Canada, Europe et’al. He said that doctors needed to go on sabbatical leaves
for further trainings and more skills, adding that medical doctors are supposed
to be given cars loans and accommodation incentives so that the brain drain issues
would be largely reduced.
He submitted
that private medical operators should be properly checked before approval is
given to them adding that some of the private medical operators are nothing
but, death traps where innocent citizens are sent to their early graves. He
submitted that lots of doctors are sick and that the government should treat
doctors freely. He generally concurred that the brain drain in the system would
one day make Nigeria a medical tourist attraction from far and near.
Speaking to
the participants the chief host of the event the Chief Medical Director (CMD) ,
LASUTH, Ikeja, Lagos Prof. Adetokunbo Famabanwo welcome the participants to the
12th Scientific Conference and Ordinary General Meeting of
Association of Resident Doctors (ARD)and he pleasantly told the participants
that they really needed to improve themselves with the latest and modern
medical training regardless of poor and bad policies of the government adding
that there would lways be brain drain of medical doctors because the right
applications have not been met by the powers that be.
Speaking to
the participants with the sub theme one Infectious Disease Burden, How far, so
far Dr. Kikelomo Ololade Wright an ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, Counsutant public
Health Physician of the department of Community health and Primary health care
LASUCOM/LASUTH, Ikeja, Lagos did not disappoint the participants with her
unimaginably presentations to the audience and speaking to the audience the sub
two the Commissioner of Plice of Lagos State(Security and Health The theme Synegy
– CP Zubairu Muazu told the participants that he was really delighted when the
executive members of ARD paid him a courtesy visit in his office recently
adding that he was pleasantly gladdened because the courtesy visit actually
opened his eyes to lots of medical issues he never knew in the past.
He said that
the issue of physical security is very necessary to all and sundry in Nigeria.
He submitted that physical security and health are interwoven in all
ramifications. He had to quickly did his presentation because he was billed for
another state assignment at Abuja.
Speaking
with journalists at MRC Hall, the
president of ARD, LASUTH, Ikeja, Lagos Dr. Fatai Balogun said that the theme of
the 12th Scientific Conference and Ordinary General Meeting ( Health
on Next Level Agenda was carefully chosen by the organizing committee adding
that the All Progressive Congress (APC) agenda is predicated on Next level and
the new governor of Lagos State Mr. Babajide Ousola Sanwoolu would follow suit
in bringing health care issues to the citizenry affordably.
He said that
he did not support the payment of #350.00 for National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by
Lagosians, adding that health care delivery has to be really free for all and
sundry. The ARD 12th Scientific Conference and Ordinary General
Meeting is chaired by Prof. Fancis Fadeleye the national chairman of Nigerian Medical
Association who made useful contributions in his remarks by goading
participants to take home some vital points from the training.
