GOOD HEALTH STARTS FROM GOOD TEETH – PROF. AROTIBA

Speaking as the faculty Day key note lecturer Prof. Godwin Toyin Arotiba an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the faculty of Dental Sciences, College of Medicine of University of Lagos, LUTH, Idiaraba, Surulere Lagos said that good health starts from good teeth. 
Speaking as Mouth, Jaw and Face surgical oncologist at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), faculty of Dentistry second biennial faculty Day Lecture and 10th year anniversary of faculty of dentistry LASUCOM with the theme: Phase Down of Mercury dental Amalgam – Training the 21st century Dentist in a developing Economy at the Malaria Research Centre (MRC), Lagos State University, Teacing Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja, Lagos, Prof. Arotiba said that the powers that be should not waste scarce resources on Amalgam separators adding that many countries in the world had practically halted the application of Amalgam separators as a means of treating teeth decay or dental cases of patients in the teaching hospitals.
He pragmatically raised many topical issues in the course of delivering his well-researched lectures, to the academia and the general public, as he stipulated that leap frogging in phase down of mercury dental amalgam in the body polity should be quickly done with adding that the growing influence Oral systemic connections would cause the followings, heart diseases, Pancreatic cancer, premature birth, low sperm count and et’al.
Speaking further prof. Arotiba dwelled on dental caries (tooth decay adding that virtually every aspect of human body is affected by bad tooth decay). He submitted that caries is a very complex disease, he also avers that early caries can be healed, treated and arrested before it destroys the human body anatomies of the patients. He concurs that dental amalgam has no relevance in the 21st century adding that 21st dentist must practice like a physician. He avers that there must be a paradigm shift in dental education is urgently required. He clinically submitted that there has to be e – learning for dental students as well as updating one’s knowledge urgently. The truth of the matter was that prof. Arotiba did not disappoint the audience with his lucid choice of words in the delivery of his lecture and he was roundly accorded standing ovation when he touched down the delivery line.
Speaking to the participants the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital LASUTH Prof. Adetokunbo Fabanwo said that when he assumed duties as the CMD that he pleasantly made pledge to have a robust working relationship with the provost of Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) to the fullest so that positive result that would translate to growth of the system be achieved effectively and efficiently for the uncommon benefits of the patients and the staffers. He commended the faculty of dentistry for her second biennial faculty Day lecture and 10th year anniversary as partners of progress in raising qualified dentists.
Speaking as the Dean, faculty of Dentistry Prof. Ademola Olaitan said that he pleasantly welcomes the students, staffers and the general public to their two – in – one event of the second Biennial Faculty Day lecture and 10th year anniversary of the young dynamic, outstanding and award winning faculty adding that the event had Prof. Arotiba, an eminent researcher, a great scholar and an uncommon Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon as the key note speaker.
Speaking again Prof. Olaitan said that they celebrated and appreciated every major player in the hosting of the faculty from all those involved in the conception of the project ‘Dentistry in LASUCOM to the executors of the blue print that gave birth to the only viable and thriving state owned Dental Faculty in Nigeria and probably the only non central government funded Dental faculty in black African.
Speaking in his own words (we salute the courage and foresight of professor John Oladapo Obafunwa who is the Provost then conceived the idea and supported growth of the faculty as Vice Chancellor. The diligence and dedication of Dr. Olabode Ogunbanjo and the committee will always be fresh in our memories. The efforts of professors Odusanya, Awosanya, Solageru and Ogbera, subsequent Provost who laboured to ensure the faculty scaled the hurdles of various accreditations are well noted. LASU Senate since her approval of the curriculum presented there by Prof. Njokanma has been playing a pivotal role in academic excellence for the faculty. Also on record is the untiring efforts of the vice Chancellor prof. Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun and his management team that ensured hitch free and full MDCN and NUC accreditations of the faculty in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
The efforts of Dr. T. A Kekere  - Ekun who was saddled with the responsibilities of commencing academic activities in the faculty as the first Dean. This address cannot be concluded without a mention of the achievements and attainment of some of our students and graduates).
Speaking with journalists Dr. A.O Awotile, Chairperson faculty Day Lecture and 10th anniversary organising committee said that the guest speaker Prof. Arotiba had actually delivered a well thoroughly researched academic lecture dwelling on the Phasing down of Mercury Dental Amalgam and as well as training the 21st century dentist in a developing economy adding that the guest speaker made the subject matter much simpler for all the participants to go home with new and fresh ideas. She said that 10 years is a long journey for the faculty of dentistry of LASUCOM, but, however, she gave thanks to Almighty God for His uncommon graces to them through all this while. She said that faculty of dentistry also celebrates second biennial faculty Day Lecture where lots of outstanding discoveries would be made known to the participants. She commended all her team in the organising committee for the successful hosting of the event.
Speaking with journalists HOD, Administration of Faculty of Dentistry, Research and Service Centre LASUCOM and also the secretary of faculty Day Lecture and 10th year anniversary organising committee Mr. Adesupo Oyebanjo said that the guest speaker Prof. Arotiba did not disappoint the audience with his cerebral presentations of the topic Phase down of Mercury Dental Amalgam, as well as training the 21st century dentists in a Developing economy adding that the professor of Mouth Jaw and Face surgical Oncologist had really revealed to the general public that good health starts from good teeth.
He concurred that all and sundry should endeavour to brush their teeth twice daily i.e morning and night when going to bed.
