Fines Are Not
Imposed To Raise Revenues For The State HAG Onigbanjo

Speaking to
gentlemen of the press at the conference room, Lagos State Ministry of justice
at a media party the Honorable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,
Lagos state Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo said that fines are not imposed to raise
revenues for the state, rather he added that minor fines imposed here and there
are meant to put cheeks and balances so that there would be a sane society for
all and sundry to live in the entire breadth and length of Lagos State
Government runs into billions of naira and he asked how much fines would the
state government imposed to law breakers that would generate billions of naira
that she needs to function optimally as a center of excellence. He pleasantly
and pragmatically disclosed that the whole essence of imposing those minor
fines here and there are forestall break down of the laws of the state.
Speaking further the Honorable Attorney General and Commissioner for justice of Lagos State
Onigbanjo said that minors put in prison is completely miscarriage of justice
adding that they quickly intervene in such matters where the culprit is removed and transferred to correctional at centers for rehabilitation for the good of the fellow and the entire of all
mankind. He said that his office regularly holds meeting with police and
security agencies so as to making sure that innocent citizen are not being
molested or harassed wrongly by overzealous security operatives he added that
his office would continually make provisions to handle victims of the wrong application
of law.
He said that the Ministry of physical Planning and Urban Development of
Lagos State Government is in charge of the cities and all that turning
residential areas as markets, they too has rights to correct those issues for
benefits of all and sundry within the entire space of Lagos State.
He
said that as the Attorney General and Commissioner for justice that the justice
sector in Lagos state would continue to experience the implementation of
programs aimed at giving the good people of Lagos state grater access to
justice through dynamics law reforms and adherence to the rule of law adding
that they recognize the need to ensure
that law and orderliness are kept and as well as it is the administrations
agenda to clamp down or criminals, land grabbers and other trouble makers to
reduce crime, all forms of security treat to the bare of minimum.
Speaking further to the gentlemen of the press, the Honorable
Attorney General Onigbanjo said that as he resumed in his office, that his
first major assignment was to chair an Exco Sub-Committee on Road Traffic and
Law and Order as the Committee critically looked into the expansion and functionality
of the mobile courts in order to seek ways of reducing street trading, traffic congestion and unethical, anti social
conducts on the fund as well as environmental nuisance thereby improving the
social-economic well being of the residents
of Lagos State.
Speaking against HAG onigbanjo said that they had all
witnessed the activities of land grabbers badly stifled commercial activities
in the state as Lagos state special
tasks force on land grabbers popularly
known as (Omo Onile Tasks force) with a mandate to adding the state of land
grabbers, had continued to receive petitions and several criminal
prosecution cases against suspected land
grabbers currently on going in different received as well clearly added that
the operation of the foretaste court a boost when 19 alleged land grabbers were
arrested on the 13th November, 2019 in kosofe Local
Government Area and that the trial is still on going at the magistrate court he
said that they presently have 35 land
grabbers cases in court, where in land grabbers had been prosecuted and that
they are hopefully that just three would be served without hindrance to serve as a determent to others land grabbers.
He said that the Office
of the Public Defender (OPD) handled
1,636 cases, 600 petitions out of which 245 had been concluded as 141 judgement
had been obtained over 30 children rescued and total compensation of N8,103,567.09 was received on
behalf of clients by the OPD as he added that the Public Advisory Centre did receive monetary claims of N3,684,666 on
behalf of claimants whilist directorate of citizen’s Rights did institute in
the national industrial court, where seven claimants were awarded N21,352,319 as
terminal benefit from their various organisation as there was basically
highlight of his office effort regrading cases to justice.
As the media parley
progressed he said that the fight against domestic and sexual violence had been
on for some time through their domestic and sexual violence response team which
is dedicated to pursing justice for
survivors and deterring perpetrators as he added recently on the 26th November 2019 there was a road walk to commit and act against domestic and
sexual violence as the road walk represented a clear message that Lagos State
Government under the watch of Mr. Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo Olu would not
tolerate any form of domestic or sexual violence and that the symbolizes of
the road walk was led by Mr Governor himself.
He said that they are looking at propagating a dedicated set
offenders register with data extracted from the Lagos Criminal Information
System and the DSVRT. When the HAG/C for justice rose from the media parley,
questions were fielded to him by the gentle men of the press and of a truth the
Senior Advocate Of Nigeria Onigbanjo did proffer elucidations to all questions
posed to him.
