By Leo Ezekiel

Speaking at the new Chancery Hall opposite St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road, Benin City, Edo State as the Special Guest of Honour the Deputy Governor Comrade/Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu stated that he once worked as a night security guard to his former boss at the Department’s of Prisons at the empowerment programme of thirty beneficiaries in various skills organized by Smart P and in collaboration with Justice Department Peace and Commission (JDPC) Benin, Benin City, Edo State adding that patience, determination, perseverance, discipline and prayerfulness are the ingredients that drive human beings to uncommon successes speaking further he stated that as a young man he said he would not work for anybody, but at some point he began to work, but, however, he was not satisfied with that work as he resigned.

He noted that after four years he resigned that life was difficult for him but because he has resolved that he would not work for people he kept on forging ahead as he adduced that at some point he began to work as a night security guard to a high ranking officer with the prison department and he particularly preferred night duties so as to be able to study his books during the day because he was running correspondences courses. He stated that when he finally qualified he began to work for himself and nine years after he also employed the son of his former boss from the prison department as he described that that was a twist of faith.

He encouraged all the beneficiaries to be patience, discipline, hardworking and prayerfulness as he added that if the beneficiaries could be honest and prompt with the delivery of their services that from job other jobs would begin to flow in for the beneficiaries thereby wealth would start coming their ways and they too would become employers of labours. He advised the recipients of various hair-dressing machines, sewing machines, electrical tools, tiling box, Manets, trowels, tile cutters, mechanic machine tools, make-up boxes with accessories to pragmatically guide the equipment given to them so as to eke out a means of livelihood from the skills they have garnered during the training period. He also handed over a Godly recipe that they the beneficiaries should not be jealous of anybody because every human being has a different gift as no two persons have the same characteristics thereby he encouraged the recipients of various equipment and cash grants to be honest and sincere with their dealings with human beings.

Speaking to the audience the Counsellor Very Rev. Fr. Michael Oyanoafoh who stood in for the Arch. Bishop Most Rev. Augustine Akubueze said that it is with great pleasure that he welcomed all and sundry to the closing ceremony of the SMAT-P meaning (SUSTAINABLE MEASURES AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS) adding that the project started in 2018 with the aims of campaigning against human trafficking, irregular migration that  targeted communities as Umogunzouagbor, Ugo and Ottah-Igbanke in Orhionmwon Local Government Area and Ikpoba-Okha as well as Idogbo, Iyanomo and Ologbo. Speaking again to the audience the Chancellor Very Rev. Fr. Oyanoafoh stated that there are major challenges they are facing in the course of the project of SMAT-P and this challenges are transportation was a challenge to accessing the communities as JDPC Benin have no vehicles of her own to access communities, community participations is not encouraging as some of the communities withdrew from the project when the center went for screening of beneficiary as well as there were those who also lied so as to benefit from the bounties and they had security challenges as there were days they could not access communities like Ugo, Ottah, Igbanke due to security challenges on the highways e.g Fulani herdsmen and bandits that usually barricade major express ways.

Speaking again to the audience he appreciated His Grace Most Rev. Akubueze for his fatherly support and for always asking the activities of JDPC which has helped them to be on their toes adding that they thanked the Late Very Rev. Fr. Paul Onyeoghame immediate past director and the overseer of the project who entrusted them with the responsibility to make sure that JDPC did not fail in the implementation of the project as they roundly prayed for his soul for eternal rest. They also thanked Bar. Onomen Oriakhi the Caritas Desk Officer in Benin who has been a wonderful guide as they appreciated him very much and please recommended them for another big project, as well as the project team and the entire staff of JDPC Benin City were also appreciated for keeping the flag flying high.
