GROUP ADVOCATES END TO STIGMIZATION OF EX-PRISONERS,
EX-OFFENDERS

Speaking as a focal person of Edo State Yellow Ribbon Advocacy Campaign Com. Edwin Asibor states that the general public has to end stigmatization of ex-prisoners/ex-convicts adding that this stigmatization largely affects the psyche of this ex-prisoners/ex-convicts/ex-inmates these assertion he made at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Press Centre, Benin City, Edo State.
Speaking
further the focal person Com. Asibor states that they all gathered to
commemorate Yellow Ribbon Advocacy Campaign which is a call to end the
stigmatization of ex-offenders, ex-inmates of Correctional Centre with the
following objectives

To create awareness on the need to give them
second chance to start life afresh.

To advocate for their acceptance inclusive of
their families into the main stream of their community.
·
To inspire community actions to support their
rehabilitation and reintegration into the main body polity.
·
To meaningfully engaged them in a productive
venture in contributing positively to the societal developments.
·
To help them rebuild their lives and show them
uncommon love so that they would quickly mix up with their contemporaries.
Speaking further the focal point of Yellow Ribbon Advocacy Com. Asibor says that everybody is not immune from custody adding that there are three main reasons attributable as to why people are road loaded to custodies as he added that many people are falsely accused of offenses they do not know of.
Com. Asibor posited that custody is established in a way to discipline and correct inmates including those who committed minor or no offense at all adding that after they are released from custodies they fall back to the ultimate or second prison of stigmatization and total rejection by family members, friends, community, society, the government are seen in the areas of employments or vying for electoral positions.
Com. Asibor the focal person of Yellow Ribbon Advocacy
states that it is imperative that stigmatization is one of the major causes of
recidivism or reoffending behavior amongst ex-inmates adding that these
ex-inmates must be properly provided for basic amenities of life such as
Education, Shelter, Acquisition Skills Training, et’al. Again, he added that
there has to be abolition of ex-convicts stigmatization in the case of offering
employments or standing up for political positions as he generally gave recipes
to all and sundry that ex-prisoners, ex-offenders, ex-inmates are human beings
created in the image of the trinity.
