We Need A Brand New Constitution in Nigeria

Speaking as the key note speaker at the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Benin Branch (The Lion Bar) Annual Law week 2022 with the Theme (Security: Panacea for National Growth) at Sir. Victor Uwaifo Innovative Hub, Airport Road, Benin City and Edo State High Court Ceremonial Hall, Sapele Road, Benin City covering from 13th – 17th June, 2022 Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN critically states that there has to be a brand new Peoples’ constitution in the land adding that the 1999 constitution handed over to Nigeria by the Military junta of retired General Abdulsalmi Abubakar has completely failed all Nigerians and Nigeria herself in all ramifications.
He did a scholarly narratives of what have been happening in the Country as
regards insecurity in all nooks and crannies of the geographical space called
Nigeria adding that the recent Owo Massacre of uncountable parishioners of St.
Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State who were gunned downy by terrorists
whom the Federal Government has not made a statement as regards the unfortunate
killings of parishioners of the said Catholic Church.
Speaking further to the members of bar and bench and general public Chief (Dr.) Ozekhome constitutional lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Akpakpa Vighi Vhighi Edoland, Enobakare Benin Kingdom states that there are economic insecurity, social insecurity, employments insecurity, building capacity insecurity in all nooks and crannies of Nigeria adding that Nigerians are heavily suppressed, repressed, oppressed, brutalized by the powers that be, therefore he is calling for a brand new constitution whereby all the peoples shall have Referendum and Memorandum of Understanding MOU.
When he rounded off his presentations to the audience
which he did extempore, he was roundly accorded a standing ovaition because his
presentations have generated critical reactions from the audience. The Chairman
of ceremony Hon. Justice Chief Joe Itsebaga Acha Chief Judge of Edo State contributed
his brief remarks to the theme Annual Law Week 2022 NBA Benin Branch (The Lion
Bar). Security: Panacea for National
Growth and SAN Ken Mozia is the head discussant who contributed positively
to the issues the key note speaker raised in his submission adding that he is
not in the support of the charting a brand new constitution for the land
arguing that charting a brand new constitution is time consuming and all that
as he also added that security should be everybody business.
Speaking
further with his view points that life which is sacred by creation is now meaningless
with recklessness of terrorists hacking down the citizenry carelessly Bar Kingsley Adaibe from Department of Public
Prosecution DPP submitted a scholarly contributions as a discussant to the
critical issues the key note speaker raised in his presentations to the
audience adding that security has to be really provided by the Federal
Government is the primary functions of any government to provide security for
lives and property of the citizenry, but he largely lamented that the government
of the day has heavily failed all and sundry in all ramifications.
The second session is the paper presentation Legal Practitioners and Professional Ethics and the Chairman of the session Hon. Justice Okungbowo while the paper presenter is Solomon Odiase Esq and of a truth, Odiase did not disappoint the audience with his scholarly submission. And Prof Job Odion, Professor of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Benin, Bnein City, Edo State submitted a scholarly and critical ideas to buttress the paper presented so that all legal professionals should always be abreast of Professional ethnics.
