Nigeria Diabetes Summit 2022, Hybrid Conference

Speaking as the Chairman of the occasion with the theme “Improving Management and Access To Diabetes Care At Radisson Blu, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, a Co-Founder of Eko Hospitals and as well as the President Endocrine Association of Nigeria, The Olor’ Ogun Dr. Sunny Kuku states that the Nigeria Diabetes Summit 2022 and Hybrid Conference is very timely adding that the Nigeria Diabetes Summit 2022 and Hybrid Conference has uncommon education to deliver to all and sundry and as he also added that a whole 100 years have gone since the discovery of diabetes Mellitus DM.

Speaking as the keynote Speaker, the former Chief Medical Director (CMO) of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos Prof. Aki Osibogun states that diabetes is a chronic disease primarily defined by high levels of blood glucose (Hyperglycaemea) giving rise to risk of tiny blood vessel damage Cretinopathy, Trephropath and Neuropathy) World Health Organization (WHO, 2008) adding that diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases whose common feature is an elevated blood glucose level resulting from defects in Insulin Secretion, Insulin action or both and he also added that both forms are due to complex interplay between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. 

Speaking further as the keynote Speaker, Prof. Osibogun states that type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which accounts for about 90%-95% cases that develop when Insulin Production is insufficient to overcome underlying Insulin resistance adding that across the globe, that about 537 Million Persons have diabetes, with the majority of them living in low and middle income nations adding that this corresponds to about 6.28% of the globe’s population and as he also added that both the number of cases and the prevalence of diabetes have been steadily increasing over the past few decades. Prof Osibogun as the keynote Speaker says that about 1.5 million deaths are directly attributed to diabetes yearly making it the ninth leading cause of mortality adding that Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation is experiencing a rapid epidemiological transition heavily characterized by a simultaneous escalating burden of communicable and non communicable diseases among other health challenges and as he as well added that diabetes, one of the non communicable disease of global attention, is a major issue to be critically looked into by experts. '

Delivering his keynote address to the participants Prof. Osibogun says that diabetes mellitus (DM) is the commonest endocrine metabolic disorder in the republic comparable to the experience in many other nations of the globe with over >90% having type 2 diabetes (T2DM) adding that according to the International Diabetic Federation (IDF), the republic has the highest occurrences of diabetes sufferers and people with impaired fasting glucose in black Africa.

Speaking to the crowds through virtual Dr. Alkali Mohammed the current National President of Diabetic Association of Nigeria made useful contributions to the summit and hybrid conference. And again speaking to the audience via virtual Prof. Babatope Kolawole displayed his professional streaks with his presentations which generated many questions for elucidations. 

Speaking to the gathering the immediate past National President of Diabetic Association of Nigeria Prof. Sunday Chinenye, a Professor of Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetes Consultant Physician/Endocrinologist, Health System Consultant of University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State made uncommon comments that most Primary Health Care Facilities do not have glucometuer of which is used for monitoring sugar level adding that when he held sway as the National President of Diabetic Association of Nigeria that he particularly toured all the 774 Local Government Areas nationwide and that he found out that some PHC facilities do not have simple glucometer. 

Speaking with Iconblazemagazineonline, Dr. Chukwukelu, Chief Consultant Family Physician as well as the Vice President Society of Family Physicians (SOFP) states that diabetes mellitus is a killer disease and of a truth the DM has actually taken away many lives adding that the sufferers need to report very carly to the hospital when they begin to notice health challenges because she avers that early treatment of the DM would go a long way to save the patients from early death.

Speaking further he opines that the treatment should be made available to all and sundry suffering from DM through Health Insurance Schemes which would enable the sufferers to be treated with Government Social Contracts.
